DESIGNER SPOTLIGHT through Shaughnessy's book
Jessica Helfand (studied graphic design and architectural theory)-American designer and writer who defines graphic design in our book::: A visual language uniting harmony and balance, color and light, scale and tension, form and content. But it is also an idiomatic language, a language of cues and puns and symbols and allusions, of cultural references and perceptual inferences that challenge both the intellect and the eye.:::jobs: design consultant in New York concentrating on editorial design.

"Once Zhuang Zhou dreamt that he was a butterfly, a butterfly flitting and fluttering around, happy with himself and doing as he pleased. He didn't know he was Zhuang Zhou. Suddenly he woke up and there he was, solid and unmistakable Zhuang Zhou. But he didn't know if he was Zhuang Zhou who had dreamt he was a butterfly, or a butterfly dreaming he was Zhuang Zhou."

Zhuangzi
"If a man were to regard the states of others as they regarded their own, then who would raise up his state to attack the state of another? It would be like attacking his own...If men were to regard the families of others as they regard their own, then who would raise up his family to overthrow that of another? It would be like overthrowing his own. Now when states and cities do not attack or injure one another, is this harm or a benefit to the world? Surely it is a benefit."
-Mozi (Mo Di) 470-391 BCE
Mozi reminds me of the memoir of Ishmael Beah, A Long Way Gone. A boy soldier in Sierra Leone who committed, witnessed, and recovered from a time of hatred within his own country.
I like thinking that in 470 BC, we understood humanity's ruthlessness. I do not understand how we lose sight of it so frequently throughout history.
